Not all of our raising require or are suitable for a crane - on some jobs we are able to install timbers using a Sumner Roust-A-Bout. What is a Roust-A-Bout and how does it work?
A Roust-A-Bout is a portable material handling piece of equipment made by Sumner Outlet. We use it to safely move and lift heavy loads. It is great for working in tight spaces thanks to its maneuverability.
The model we use can lift a maximum of 1,500 pounds up to a height of 25 feet. With the material hoist providing a stable support we can precisely position timbers to join them.
We often use our Roust-A-Bout when we are installing decorative timbers. On these projects there is often no possible way to use a crane due to the stage of construction that the building is already at and space constraints.
Below is a look at some of our recent projects utilizing this piece of equipment.
Roust-A-Bout Raisings

Raising this pool pavilion at a home in Atlanta was a perfect use of the portable lift. A tight workspace behind a large home with a lot of trees on the property meant this was our best option for raising the timber frame. The equipment's capacity made it the right fit for the job.

These projects are some of the decorative timber work we do. (We call this type of job "trimber framing.") While we prefer our timber frames to be structural there are instances where this type of work suits a specific build efficiently. The Roust-A-Bout is an effective tool when our timbers are going in to a structure that is already under roof and partially completed.
All in all, the Roust-A-Bout is valuable tool for us, making it relatively easy to safely maneuver heavy timbers on a variety of job sites.
